CRU in 1Malaysia Charity Ride

Cycle Response Unit (CRU) was called to provide first aid and medical service for the 1Malaysia Charity Ride, on last Sunday, 25 Sept at Straits Quay Penang, where more than 5000 cyclist and public turn up to the event. The event also attended by Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

The team of 23 CRU riders, consists of doctors, nurses, medics and first aiders, was among the strongest team of CRU ever deployed. CRU team gathered as early as 5.30am at CRU Hub at SJAM Penang HQ, geared with first aid and medical equipment including Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and emergency drugs, they were then proceed to the event venue on 6.00am sharp and reached there 15 minutes later.

The event were run smoothly without any case required extensive medical attention, the team of CRU enjoyed serving the public with joy and happiness.

Cycling to save lives

THE Cycle Response Unit (CRU) of the St John Ambulance Malaysia (SJAM) Penang is now opening up its membership to the public.

SJAM state staff officer Hoe Chin Khwan said that although the unit was initiated in June 2007, they would now provide training to those who are interested to join.

“When it was first initiated, CRU was then the first medical unit on bicycles in Penang.

“Each bicycle is equipped with a first aid kit and operated by CRU members who are able to provide basic first aid,” he said.

He said CRU members were able to navigate through narrow paths and provide immediate first aid treatment at places where ambulances found them hard to reach.

CRU members are normally despatched during public events such as the Wesak Day procession, Penang Bridge International Marathon, Starwalk, and various other events or activities, as they are able to reach the casualties faster and more effectively than foot patrols.

SJAM Millennium Combined Adult Division (MCAD) officer-in-charge Tan Teik Kean said that the unit now had 30 cyclists and 16 bicycles, and is also equipped with a semi-automatic defibrillator to provide service to patients who collapse due to heart arrest.

“The first four minutes are the most crucial moments for patients who have heart failure, and the defibrillator is the tool that will be able to save the day.

“Those who join us will be trained on basic first aid knowledge as well as how to operate the defibrillator,” he said during the launching of the CRU and MCAD cabin at the St John Ambulance headquarters in Grove Road, George Town, recently.

Tanjung Bungah assemblyman Teh Yee Cheu, who is an avid cyclist, registered as a CRU member at the event.

Charity Project – Kids Happy, We Happy too

Sunday, 20 February, more than 30 SJAM members joined the group to go tour with 30 less fortunate kids from charity home. The kids were brought to visit Toy Musuem and later Fire Station at Bagan Jermal.

This is part of MCAD Charity Project, beside bringing joys to the less fortunate during festive season, we also create caring society awareness to the members of SJAM.

MCAD thanks to all the organizing commitee for your hard work, members for your participation. For those less fortunate kids, we bring happy to you, we happy too! See you!

MCAD’s CRU was called to assist in First Aid Standby for Starwalk 2010 recently, the duty which was lead by ADO Tew Choong Wei saw the importance of CRU in long distance sports event where CRU attended to several cases that day, which motor vehicles not assessible because of crowds.

Once again, thanks to all the MCAD’s volunteers who make it to the day, sacrifice your weekends to serve the community!

Blood Donation & Mass CPR, success! Mission Accomplished!

MCAD first aiders were called to standby for Komtar Tower Run 2010 this morning. Runners were required to run up to the top of this 232m high Komtar Tower. First Aiders were stationed at every floor of the tower to standby for any mishaps happen.

CRU in Ride with Chief Minister

MCAD Cycle Responder Unit (CRU) was called to assist in first aid coverage for cycling event this morning. CRU was tasked to escort the 12km Ride with CM – Family Ride, which together in the ride is the Honorable Chief Minister of Penang, Tuan Lim Guan Eng.

There are 3 catergories in today’s event: Round Island Ride (80km), Teluk Bahang Ride (50km) and Family Ride (12km).

12 CRU officers and members turn up today to cater the first aid coverage. MCAD would like to express appreciation to all these 12 CRU volunteers. Thank you.
